Portugal June 2021: Renault Captur now #1 YTD in market up 71%

The Renault Captur is now #1 year-to-date in Portugal.

New car sales in Portugal gain 71% year-on-year in June to 18.936 registrations, bringing the year-to-date volume up 25.6% to 81.445. Note June 2021 remains significantly down on pre-pandemic levels of two years ago in June 2019 at -25.2% for the month vs. 25.305 then and -36.7% year-to-date (vs. 128.595 over H1 2019). Renault (+93.7%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year to shoot up to 17.1% share vs. 11.1% year-to-date where it remains #2. Peugeot (+19.4%) is weak in 2nd place with 8% of the market vs. 11.7% so far in 2021. Fiat (+232.1%) secures the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and soars 14 spots on May to land on the third step of the podium. It distances five carmakers outpacing the market: BMW (+123.5%), Volkswagen (+149.4%), Toyota (+95.9%), Seat (+110.3%) and Citroen (+78.8%). Mercedes (+2.1%) is down five spots on last month to #9. Just outside the Top 10, Opel (+244%) impresses while further down, Tesla (+414.8%), Mitsubishi (+368.8%), Lexus (+305.9%) Skoda (+253.1%), DS (+150%) and Jeep (+122.4%) stand out.

Over in the models ranking, the Renault Clio (+87%) and Captur (+125.6%) hold onto the top two spots but due to a particularly weak start of the year by the Clio, it’s the Captur that takes the year-to-date lead with 4.4% share vs. 3.7% for the Clio in 2nd place. The Fiat 500 (+478%) is up 32 ranks on May to land at #3 ahead of the VW Polo (+454.3%) also outstanding at #4. The Peugeot 2008 (+7.8%) rounds out the Top 5 above the Seat Ibiza (+560%) and Peugeot 208 (+68.1%) which loses its YTD leadership and is now down to #3 YTD. The BMW 1 Series (+270.6%) and Renault Megane (+148.6%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10. Down 13 spots to #27, the Citroen C4 however remains the best-selling recent launch (<12 months) just above the Hyundai Bayon (#29) new for the month. The Opel Mokka (#49) and BMW iX3 (#62) follow.
