When comparing with pre-pandemic levels of two years ago, the market is down -13.3% for the month and -17.9% or roughly 200.000 units year-to-date. A worrying sign that Italian sales are still on shaky ground in terms of recovery is private sales actually down year-on-year this month at -1.1% to 85.728 and 57% share vs. 64.9% a year ago. All other channels are in positive. Self-registrations are up 22.8% to 16.699, long term leases are up 37.8% to 29.326, short-term rentals up 139% to 10.686 and company sales up 4.9% to 7.892. Over in the brands ranking, Fiat (+19.4%) outpaces its home market but has to settle for 14.8% share vs. 15.7% so far this year. Volkswagen (+19.2%) evolves similarly but achieves a higher share than YTD at 9.1% vs. 8.6%. After a paltry start of the year (it ranks #7 YTD vs. #4 over the Full Year 2020), Renault (-9.5%) is in negative but soars back up 6 spots on May to lodge its first podium finish since last December at #3. Toyota (+10.8%) and Peugeot (+11.5%) can’t quite match the market growth rate and round out the Top 5. Citroen (+27%) remains at #6 while Dacia (+8.7%) is up 7 spots on last month to #7, its highest ranking in a year. Opel (+33.3%) and Jeep (+21%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Hyundai (+74.7%), Volvo (+37%), Kia (+35.5%), Seat (+32.6%), Lancia (+23.5%) impress in the Top 20 and DR Motor (+158.6%), Tesla (+156.2%) and Smart (+130.6%) make waves below.

Model-wise, the Fiat Panda (+20.7%) easily retains the top spot, with its mild hybrid variant accounting for 77.2% of its June total. We have a surprise in 2nd place: the Dacia Sandero (+32.3%) finally takes full advantage of its new generation and is up 9 spots on May to break its Italian ranking record (previous best: #3 in August 2019). The Lancia Ypsilon (+23.7%) remains in third place but is now up to #2 year-to-date, with its mild hybrid version accounting for 81% of its June volume. The Jeep Compass (+48.6%) is up three spots on last month to #4 and leads the PHEV charts. It distances the Toyota Yaris (+27.2%) and Fiat 500 (+26.6%) ending a stint of three consecutive months at #2. The Opel Corsa (+53.6%) and Citroen C3 (+28.1%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 while the Renault Captur (+2.1%) is up 14 ranks on May to #10. Further down, great performers include the Tesla Model 3 (+208.5%), Citroen C1 (+126%), Hyundai Tucson (+90%), Kia Picanto (+78.1%), BMW 1 Series (+75.8%) and Volvo XC40 (+71.9%). The Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling EV in Italy in June ahead of the Fiat 500, Renault Twingo, Dacia Spring and Smart Fortwo.
