India June 2021: Market back up 14% on two years ago, Maruti Wagon R #1

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is the best-selling vehicle in India in June.

New car wholesales in India are up 118.4% year-on-year in June to 255.397 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 95.5% to 1.577.611. More significantly, June 2021 volumes are up 14% on the pre-pandemic levels of June 2019 (224.095) whereas May 2021 was off -56.3% on two years prior. After a paltry result in May (down to 31.8% share), Maruti Suzuki (+142.4%) catches up on lost wholesales and is the only Top 5 carmaker to outpace the market, improving to 48.7% share vs. 45.8% so far this year. Hyundai (+89.9%) is down to 15.9% this month vs. 17.2% YTD. Tata (+111.1%), Mahindra (+109%) and Kia (+106.4%) follow but can’t quite catch up on the market growth rate. Another poor performer in May, Toyota (+127.6%) is back up 7 spots to the 6th place it also holds year-to-date. Nissan (+4665.7%) thanks to the new Magnite, Honda (+241%) and Jeep (+208.2%) also impress. Newcomer Citroen is up just one sale on May to a slim 41.

Model-wise, Maruti Suzuki reclaims utter domination, holding the first six spots. The Wagon R (+178.9%) takes the lead for the 2nd time in the past 3 months and is up to #2 year-to-date as a result. It distances the Swift (+341.7%) which holds onto the YTD pole position, the Baleno (+241.9%), Vitara Brezza (+182.5%) now up to #7 year-to-date, DZire (+116.6%) and Alto (+71.5%) in difficulty. Leader last month, the Hyundai Creta (+37.9%) is down to #7 in June, while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+200.1%), Hyundai Grand i10 (+144.6%) and Maruti Suzuki Eeco (+142.4%) round out the Top 10 in dynamic fashion. The Kia Sonet remains the best-selling recent launch (<12 months) but is down 12 spots on May to #15, it is followed by the Nissan Magnite (#24), Hyundai Alcazar (#26), Toyota Urban Cruiser (#31) and Renault Kiger (#37).
