Germany June 2021: Tesla Model 3 breaks into Top 10 in market up 24.5% on 2020 but down -15.7% on 2019

The Tesla Model 3 breaks into the German Top 10 for the first time in June.

New car sales in Germany are up 24.5% year-on-year in June to 274.152, leading to a year-to-date tally up 14.9% to 1.390.889. However when comparing this score with pre-pandemic June 2019, the market remains down -15.7% vs. the 325.231 sales of then. This is a markedly better hold than in May (-30.7%) and April (-26.1%). In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+46.1%) almost doubles the market growth rate to reach 20.8% share vs. 19.9% so far this year, while BMW (+20.9%) repeats at #2 and now also ranks in 2nd place year-to-date. Audi (+29%) edges past the market to remain at #3 while Mercedes (-19.3%) is in difficulty at #4. Opel (+69.3%) is back inside the Top 5 both in June and year-to-date, taking advantage of a lukewarm month by Skoda (+12.5%). Hyundai (+81.5%) and Seat (+39.7%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Ford (-27.1%) and Renault (-2.2%) go backwards. Below, Tesla (+431%), Smart (+211.6%), Suzuki (+210%), Alfa Romeo (+88.6%), Kia (+60.2%), Mazda (+59%) and Toyota (+51%) are among the biggest gainers.

Over in the models ranking, Volkswagen monopolises the Top 4 as it does year-to-date, placing the Golf (+16.1%) at its usual pole position with 4.4% share vs. 3.9% YTD above the Tiguan (+9.2%) up 3 spots on May to #2, the T-Roc (+60.5%) remaining at a record #3 and the Passat (+64.9%) still at #4. The Opel Corsa (+80.1%) is up two ranks on last month to #5, the Fiat Ducato (-12.7%) is down four to $6 ,the VW Up (+200.6%) up one to #7 and the BMW 3 Series (+38.7%) up two to #8. The hero of the month is the Tesla Model 3 (+534.7%) up 6-fold year-on-year to break into the German Top 10 for the first time at #9. It now ranks #25 year-to-date vs. #64 over the Full Year 2020. Other notable performers further down include the Hyundai Kona (+135.2%), Ford Kuga (+118.4%), Puma (+117.1%), Seat Arona (+92.4%) and BMW X3 (+90.9%), all roughly doubling their sales year-on-year. The Opel Mokka (#27) is the best-selling recent launch above the VW ID.3 (#30), Cupra Formentor (#36), VW ID.4 (#54) and Skoda Enyaq (#58).
