Vietnam May 2021: VinFast Fadil best-seller in market up 34%

The VinFast Fadil is the best-selling vehicle in Vietnam in May. 

Vietnam new vehicle sales are up 34% year-on-year in May to 25.585 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up  51.5% to 126.894. These figures climb to 34.493 for the month and 167.500 year-to-date when adding Hyundai and VinFast who report separately from VAMA.

In the manufacturers ranking, Hyundai (+25.2%) returns to pole position ahead of Thaco-Kia (+42.7%) but stays in 2nd place year-to-date a mere 530 units below Thaco-Kia. Toyota (+23.3%) remains at #3 while local carmaker VinFast climbs to #4 with 8.3% share vs. 7.4% so far this year. Below, Mitsubishi (+76.4%) and Mazda (+39%) outpace the market to close the Top 6 while Ford (-10.3%) and Honda (-47.6%) underperform. Notice also Peugeot (+160.4%) and Hino (+75%) sporting extravagant year-on-year gains.

For the second time this year after last February, the VinFast Fadil (+61.6%) is the outright best-selling vehicle in Vietnam with 5.4% share, selling almost double that of its direct competitor the Hyundai Grand i10 (-11.4%). As a reminder, the Fadil is in fact a rebadged Opel Karl Rocks with raised suspension, grey plastic wheel arch protectors and lower body cladding. Leader over the Full Year 2020, the Toyota Vios (-8.6%) is stuck in 2nd place, a ranking it also now holds year-to-date. Best-seller last month, the Hyundai Accent (+43.6%) drops to #3 while the Mitsubishi Outlander (+114.6%) posts a splendid gain to remain at #4. The Hyundai Santa Fe (+93.7%) also makes itself noticed at a record 5th place. The Kia Seltos stays at #6 to top recent launches above the Toyota Corolla Cross at #10.
