Portugal May 2021: Renault Clio & Captur on top, Peugeot 208 #1 YTD in market down -26.7% on two years ago
The Renault Clio is the best-selling vehicle in Portugal in May.
The Portuguese new car market surges back up 190.2% year-on-year in May to 16.661 registrations, leading to a year-to-date tally up 16.2% to 62.509. However, May 2021 volumes are still down significantly on two years ago pre-pandemic scores at -26.7% for the month (22.724 in May 2019) and -39.5% year-to-date (103.290 in 2019). Peugeot (+200.7%) reclaims the brands top spot it holds year-to-date off Renault (+184.5%) but the two carmakers are only separated by 22 units so a very close finish. Citroen (+314.8%) frankly beat the market and gains one spot on April to #3 while Mercedes (+65.3%) suffers from a high comparison base from a year ago when it led the market with a record 13.2% share. The German carmaker however gains one rank on last month to #4. Toyota (+449.8%), Volkswagen (+328.8%) and Ford (+248.2%) also vastly outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10 while Hyundai (+223.1%) and Seat (+195.6%) do so to a lesser degree. BMW (+120.8%) is underwhelming and drops two spots to #5. Below, Mitsubishi (+423.1%), Opel (+385%), Kia (+281.9%), Audi (+274.2%), Skoda (+273.8%) make themselves noticed.
Model-wise, Renault scores a 1-2 with the Clio (+163.6%) up five spots on April to #1 and the Captur (+289%) down one to #2. However it’s the Peugeot 208 (+273.2%), #3 for the month, that snaps the year-to-date lead, toppling the Peugeot 2008 (+105.5%) down 8 spots on last month to #11 in May. The Mercedes A-Class (+105.6%) climbs one spot to #4 but significantly trails the market as it ranked #1 a year ago in May 2020. Outstanding performances of the Toyota Yaris (+646.5%) up 8 ranks to #5, the Nissan Juke (+442.1%) up 14 to #8 and Peugeot 3008 (+473.4%) remaining at #10. The Citroen C4 is up 6 ranks to #14 and easily leads recent launches ahead of the Opel Mokka (#63), Mercedes EQA (#68), Citroen e-C4 (#82) and VW ID.3 (#84).
