Switzerland April 2021: VW ID.3 breaks ranking record in market down -22.9% on two years ago

The VW ID.3 is up to a record #8 in Switzerland in April.

New car sales in Switzerland leap up 135.1% year-on-year in April to 22.054 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 21.2% to 78.551. Note April 2021 volumes remain down a tough -22.9% on two years ago in April 2019 (28.620). At 10.525, 4×4 sales (+115.5%) can’t quite follow the market growth and drop from 52.1% share a year ago to 47.7% this month, while year-to-date 4×4 sales are up 10.7% to 38.041 and 48.4% share vs. 53% over the same period in 2020. Petrol sales are up 100% to 10.032 and 45.5% share vs. 53.5% in April 2020, diesel sales are up only 41.3% to 3.317 and 15% vs. 25% a year ago, but alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFV) shoot up 331.1% to 8.705 and 39.5% share vs. 21.5% in April 2020. This includes 4.778 HEV (+360.3%), 1.974 BEV (+271%) and 1.918 PHEV (+352.3%). Year-to-date, AFV sales are up 114.3% to 29.461 and 37.5% share vs. 21.2% over the same period in 2020, including 16.402 HEV (+131.3%), 6.710 BEV (+83.7%) and 6.233 PHEV (+130.2%).

Over in the brands ranking, Mercedes (+153%) reclaims the top spot hit holes year-to-date off Volkswagen (+127.9%), while BMW (+71.9%) drops one spot on March to round out the podium. Below, Skoda (+130.5%), Audi (+298.5%) and Seat (+113.8%) camp on their positions while Toyota (+195.3%) and Renault (+116.4%) ensure the Top 8 is identical to the year-to-date order. Ford (+84.4%) underperforms whereas Suzuki (+368%) breaks into the Top 10 where it scores the largest year-on-year gain. Further down, Jeep (+248.3%), Kia (+232.8%), Citroen (+204.4%), Opel (+183.5%), Land Rover (+180.2%), Volvo (+173.6%) and Peugeot (+157.9%) stand out.

Model-wise, this month the Skoda Octavia (+95.8%) returns to the top spot it holds year-to-date despite trailing the market by some margin. It is followed by the Mercedes A-Class (+306%) and VW Tiguan (+91.1%), replicating the year-to-date podium. The Audi Q3 (+302.9%) is up two spots on March to #4, ahead of the Fiat 500 (+205.7%), Mini (+106.1%) and Skoda Karoq (+180.5%). The VW ID.3 is up 20 ranks on last month to break its ranking record at #8 (previous best #10 last September), topping all recent launches including the Cupra Formentor (#36), VW ID.4 (#53) and Opel Mokka (#59).
