Ireland April 2021: Hyundai Tucson returns to #1 in market down -19.6% on two years ago

The Hyundai Tucson is back to #1 in Ireland.

The Irish new car market is up a surreal 1988.3% year-on-year in April to 7.163 units as sales all but stopped a year ago due to the Covid-19 lockdown. The year-to-date tally is now up 10.1% to 55.204 units. A more meaningful comparison set is April 2019 and in this case April 2021 volumes are down -19.6% vs. 8.913 two years ago and year-to-date sales down -24.4% vs. 73.030. All evolutions from now on are vs. April 2019, not 2020. Volkswagen (-4.6%) resists very well to hold onto the top spot with 14% share vs. 11.3% so far this year, keeping Toyota (-43.5%) at bay with 10.4% of the market vs. 12.8% YTD. Skoda (+21.8%) rounds our the podium in very dynamic fashion, overtaking Hyundai (-6.7%) while Audi (+89.3%) leaps up 7 spots on last month to land at #5. Below, Kia (+18.3%) and Mercedes (+15.6%) impress.

Over in the models ranking, the Hyundai Tucson (+31.2%) reclaims the top spot for the third time in the past four months, cementing its YTD domination at 5.3% share vs. 4.2% for the Toyota Corolla (-59.9%) in difficulty this month but back up two spots on March to #2 overall. The Toyota C-HR (+14.4%) leaps up 19 ranks on last month to spectacularly land on the third step of the podium. Leader last month, as expected the VW ID.4 slows down to #4 as backorders are fulfilled. It distances the VW Tiguan (-15.2%) and Ford Focus (+47.1%), the latter in outstanding shape. No other Top 10 model manages a gain vs. two years ago, with the Skoda Kodiaq (-3.3%) and Peugeot 3008 (-8.9%) resisting best. The Kia Sorento (+345.8%), Niro (+245.2%), Audi A3 (+205.3%) and Peugeot 2008 (+152.7%) stand out further down.
