Vietnam January 2021: Mitsubishi Xpander takes the lead in market surging 67.4%

The Mitsubishi Xpander is the best-selling vehicle in Vietnam in January.

The Vietnamese new vehicle market is up a whopping 67.4% year-on-year in January to 26.432, this has to do with the Lunar New Year falling in February 2021 vs. January 2020 resulting in much more activity this January. This figure climbs to 35.291 when adding Hyundai and VinFast who report separately from VAMA. This month Thaco-Kia (+105.2%) edges past Hyundai (+1.9%) to become the best-selling manufacturer in the country. Toyota (+13.1%) drops one spot on December to #3 while Mitsubishi (+120%) soars to 10.4% share vs. 7.2% over the Full Year 2020. Local carmaker Vinfast is down one rank on last month to #6 with 7.9% share, with Hino (+210.3%), Suzuki (+203.2%) and Peugeot (+92.1%) also easily outpacing the market.

In the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Xpander (+141%) returns to the top spot for the first time since November 2019. It distances the Hyundai Accent (+3.8%) and Vinfast Fadil at 4.9% share. The Honda City (+171.8%) takes full advantage of a new model at #4 ahead of the Hyundai Grand i10 (-12.2%). Leader over the Full Year 2020, the Toyota Vios (-15.8%) drops to 6th overall this month, just above the most popular recent launch in the country: the Kia Seltos up to a record 7th place also hit last November. The Toyota Corolla Cross is up two spots on last month to #12 but the Suzuki XL7 is down 11 to #30.
