Spain February 2021: Peugeot 2008 scores first ever win in market off -38.4%

The Peugeot 2008 is the best-selling vehicle in Spain in February.

The Spanish new car market continues to struggle in February with sales down -38.4% to 58.279 units, falling to a level not seen in 8 years: since 2013 (58.403). For the first time since 1996, company sales overtake private sales with 26.111 units (-18.7%) vs. 23.154 private sales (-43.8%) while rental sales freefall once again at -57.7% to 9.014. Year-to-date, the market is down -44.6% to 100.242 with company sales down -31.4% to 44.506, private sales off -48.4% to 42.187 and rental sales down -60.7% to 34.435. According to Faconauto, traffic in dealerships is down -50% compared to a year ago. Low confidence of private buyers during the third wave of Covid-19 are the main driver behind the market’s fall this month.

Peugeot (-21%) brilliantly takes the lead of the brands ranking both for the month and year-to-date, being the only carmaker to sell over 5.000 units this month at just under 6.200 and 10.6% share. The French brand overtakes Seat (-42.5%) down to 2nd place in February and YTD. Toyota (-25.5%) maintains itself at an outstanding third place with 8.4% share, while Volkswagen (-34.4%) rallies back up six spots on January to land at #4 above Renault (-40.4%). BMW (-30%) and Hyundai (-35.3%) manage to slightly outpace the market but Kia (-49%), Audi (-45.7%) and Citroen (-41.8%) aren’t that lucky. Outside the Top 10, Cupra (+601.1%), Tesla (+33.3%) and Ssangyong (+13.2%) are among rare gainers while Jeep (-7.1%), Skoda (-8.1%) post solid holds.

Over in the models ranking, the Peugeot 2008 (+26.2%) takes full advantage of its new generation to score its first ever win in Spain at 3.1% share. It distances the Renault Clio (-18.3%) back up 10 spots on January to #2 and the Seat Leon (-43.6%) remaining #1 YTD. The Peugeot 208 (-19.7%) also also performs well at #4 while the Citroen C3 (-16.2%) rounds out the Top 5 vs. #14 so far this year ahead of the Toyota Corolla (-31.2%). Peugeot manages to place four nameplates in the Top 10 with the 3008 (-38.1%) at #9 and the 308 (-30.6%) at #10. Up to a record #3 last month, the Hyundai Tucson (+3.2%) drops to #11 in February but still manages a rare year-on-year uptick. The Cupra Formentor is the best-selling recent launch at #43.

Previous month: Spain January 2021: Hyundai Tucson up to record #3, Cupra Formentor in Top 25, sales freefall -51.5%
