Indonesia February 2021: Market down -38.2%, new Sonet propels Kia up 187.5%

The Sonet accounts for 97% of Kia sales in Indonesia this month.

Indonesian new vehicle wholesales are off another -38.2% year-on-year in February to 49.202 units, pulling the year-to-date volume down -36.2% to 102.111. Retail sales are down -36.8% to 46.941 for the month and off -35.7% to 100.939 year-to-date.

In the wholesales brands ranking, the top three best-sellers fall just a smidge faster than the market: Toyota (-39.6%), Daihatsu (-40.3%) and Honda (-40.1%) all lose significant ground. Mitsubishi (-37.4%) is just below the market fall rate while Suzuki (-46.6%) implodes. Isuzu (-10.3%), Fuso (-13.3%) and Hino (-28%) resist just as Kia (+187.5%) is up 3-fold on its year-ago volume to land inside the Top 10 at #10.

In the retail brands ranking, Toyota (-47.5%) gets pummelled alongside Honda (-49.5%), Suzuki (-37%) and Daihatsu (-38.4%) roughly match the market while Isuzu (-10.3%) and Mitsubishi (-28.4%) perform better. Nissan (+14.4%) lodges the only year-on-year gain in the Top 10. It is joined further down by Kia (+110.5%) and Hyundai (+70.9%).

Model-wise, the Honda Brio (-25.7%) cements its leadership above the Suzuki Carry (-20.1%), both models gaining share year-on-year, as also the case for the remainder of the Top 5: the Toyota Kijang Innova (-32%), Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap (-23.2%) and Toyota Calya (-23.7%). The Mitsubishi L-300 Pikap (+0.6%) secures the only year-on-year gain in the Top 10. Among recent launches, the Kia Sonet leaps directly to #23 and accounts for 97% of the brand’s sales in Indonesia this month. A competitor, the Nissan Magnite, lands at #113.
