New car sales in the United Arab Emirates skid down -29.5% year-on-year in 2020 to 152.235 units. Toyota (-22.1%) resists well in context and improves its market share from 30.9% to 34.1% as does Nissan (-27%) edging up to 21.3% of the market. This means Toyota and Nissan account for a mammoth 55.4% of the UAE market this year. Mitsubishi (-53.3%) is in freefall but remains in third place with 8.7% share. Kia (-19.4%), Jeep (-21.1%) and Lexus (-26.6%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Ford (-45.1%) and Chevrolet (-41.2%) are hit hard. Further down the charts, Changan (+237.3%), Opel (+120%), Cadillac (+11.8%), Hino (+5.9%) and Suzuki (+3.8%) post rare gains.

Over in the models ranking, the Nissan Patrol (-7.6%) takes advantage of a new generation to topple its archenemy the Toyota Land Cruiser (-17.3%) with both models significantly improving their market share year-on-year to 9.3% and 8.7% respectively. This is the third time in the past four years that the Nissan Patrol tops the UAE charts after 2017 and 2018. The Toyota Hilux (-11.3%) leaps up two spots on last year to #3, overtaking the Nissan Sunny (-46.8%) and Mitsubishi Pajero (-66.5%) both in great difficulty. The Toyota Land Cruiser Pickup (-9.8%), Hiace (-13.4%) and Mitsubishi L200 (-14.6%) resist best in the remainder of the Top 10. New launches haven’t made much of an impact this year in the UAE, with the Chevrolet Captiva leading the pack at #45 ahead of the Land Rover Defender (#94) and Toyota C-HR (#98).
