Sweden January 2021: Market up 22.5% on low year-ago comparison

Toyota RAV4 sales are up 307.2% year-on-year in January.

In January, the Swedish new car market soars 22.5% year-on-year on a very low year-ago comparison volume to 20.573 units, equivalent to January 2019 volumes (20.478). After reaching a record 49% in December, rechargeable cars (EV+PHEV) fall back to 33.5% vs. 30.7% in January 2020. Volvo (+51.7%) vastly outpaces its home market to hit 20.6% share vs. 18.1% over the Full Year 2020. In contrast, Volkswagen (-4.8%) drops to 13.2% vs. 14.7% while Kia (+2.1%) also can’t match the market growth but stands at a higher 9.7% share vs. 8.6% over FY2020. Four of the next seven best-sellers beat the market: Toyota (+64.2%), Peugeot (+60.6%), Mercedes (+34.4%) and BMW (+26.9%) all post stellar gains while Skoda (+18.1%), Seat (+12.3%) and Audi (+8%) are more reserved. Further down, Nissan (+393%), Subaru (+191.1%), Citroen (+144.7%) and Opel (+62%) all impress. Local newcomer Polestar remains in the Top 20 at #19 and 0.7% share.

Over in the models ranking, the Volvo S/V60 (+30.9%) reclaims the top spot it held over the FY2020 while the VW ID.3, artificially boosted to #1 in December, is now down to #115 with just 25 sales. The Volvo XC40 (+137.3%) is up three spots on last month to #2, the Volvo XC60 (+116.9%) remains at #3 and the Kia Ceed (+111.5%) rallies back up 6 ranks to #4. At #5, the Toyota RAV4 (+307.2%) is the largest gainer in the Top 10, followed by the VW T-Roc (+149.2%) scoring its very first Swedish Top 10 finish at #8. The Polestar 2 is the most successful recent launch (<12 months) at #31.
