Portugal January 2021: Peugeot 2008 secures first ever win in market down -30.5%

The Peugeot 2008 is the best-selling vehicle in Portugal in January.

The Portuguese new car market sinks -30.5% year-on-year in January to just 10.029 units. Peugeot (-15.6%) and Mercedes (-16.3%) both manage to roughly cut the market drop rate in two to take the lead of the brands ranking while BMW (+5.2%) and Toyota (+12.8%) both go against the grain with year-on-year upticks at #3 and #4 respectively. Renault (-57.5%) implodes from #1 in December and over the Full Year 2020 to #5 this month. Hyundai (+1.1%) is the only additional gainer in the Top 15, ranking at a splendid 6th place vs. #16 in December and #12 over FY2020. Further down the charts, Lexus (+120.9%), Smart (+66.7%) and Honda (+28.8%) stand out.

In the models ranking, the Peugeot 2008 (+51.1%) signs its first ever monthly win in Portugal thanks to soaring sales. It distances the Mercedes A-Class (-16.8%) rallying back up 15 spots on December to #2 and the BMW 1 Series (+14.4%) up 17 ranks to #3. The Hyundai i20 (+160.8%), Toyota C-HR (+44.5%), Corolla (+31.4%) and Renault Captur (+5.7%) also post market-defying gains in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas the Citroen C3 (-48.7%), Peugeot 208 (-37.9%) and 3008 (-26.4%) are hit hard. Leader over the Full Year 2020, the Renault Clio (-73.6%) drops to a paltry 21st position in January. With the Ford Puma (+75%) celebrating one year in market, the Mercedes GLB (#34) becomes the most successful new launch (<12 months) ahead of the Citroen C4 (#64) and Porsche Taycan (#101).
