New car sales in Kazakhstan ignore the Covid crisis in 2020 and manage an impressive third straight double-digit gain at +23.8% to 92.979 units after gaining 23.2% in 2019 and 24.2% in 2018. The big event atop the brands ranking is Hyundai (+20.2%) edging past Lada (+13.6%) to snap the annual pole position for 2020 with 19.2% share vs. 18.8% for the Russian carmaker just as Toyota (-29%) underperforms in third place. Hyundai may however not be able to retain the top spot in 2021 as Chevrolet (+1096.8%) has returned to Kazakhstan with local assembly and topped the monthly charts in October and December. It ends 2020 in 4th place with 10.8% share, only 48 units off a podium finish. Ravon (+95.5%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year to remain in 5th place above Kia (+59.7%) and GAZ (+20.1%). JAC (+79.9%) and Volkswagen (+43.8%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10.

Over in the models ranking, there’s a lot of change at the top with the Lada Granta (+50.1%) taking control of the charts with 8.1% share, ending a run of three consecutive annual wins by the Toyota Camry (-33%) down to #6 this year. The Ravon Nexia R3 (+98.9%) shoots up five spots to #2 overall but is being replaced by the Chevrolet Nexia (#12 this year) so will disappear in 2021. The Hyundai Accent (+47.2%) also outpaces the market and overtake the Tucson (+4.5%) as the best-selling Hyundai in Kazakhstan. The new Chevrolet attack on the Kazakh market is led by the Cobalt, up to #5 with just a handful of months of sales and #1 in October and December when it held 12.9% of the market. The Cobalt is a favourite to end 2021 as the best-seller here. The Kia Rio (+102.4%) breaks into the Top 10 and the Hyundai Creta (+27.6%) also beats the market but drops one spot to #9.
