Greece Full Year 2020: Toyota Yaris and Nissan Qashqai lead market off -29% to lowest in four years

The Greek new car market falls -29% year-on-year in 2020 to just 80.977 units vs. 114.109 a year ago in 2019. This is the weakest annual result since the 78.873 units of 2016. Toyota (-18.4%) and Peugeot (-19.4%) easily remain the two most popular carmakers in the country at 12.7% and 9.8% share respectively, thanks to somewhat contained drops. In fact the Top 5 brands are unchanged on last year, with Volkswagen (-27.2%) improving its share slightly to 8.5% but Hyundai (-34%) and Opel (-31.9%) in difficulty. Mercedes (-20.3%), Nissan (-23.2%) and Renault (-24%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Jeep (+53.8%), Land Rover (+14.4%) and Tesla (+1000%) score rare gains just as Porsche (-1.9%), Lexus (-3.3%), BMW (-7%) and Mini (-8.7%) resist well.

Model-wise, the Toyota Yaris (-35.2%) scores an 8th straight annual win in Greece but the new generation hasn’t yet lifted sales as the nameplate loses share to to 5.6%. Leader in November and December, the Nissan Qashqai (-10.2%) reduces its loss and leaps 5 spots on last year to land in 2nd place overall with 3.8% share, nudging the Opel Corsa (-28.2%) down to #3. The Peugeot 208 (-21.9%) is up two spots to #4 and the Renault Clio (-21.7%) up three to #5, knocking the VW Polo (-48.3%) to #6 and the Citroen C3 (-47.5%) to #7. There are three newcomers in the 2020 Top 10 and they are all Toyotas: the C-HR (+4.5%) is up five ranks to #9, the Corolla (+39.4%) up 17 to #9 and the Aygo (-10%) up three to #10. The Ford Puma is this year’s most successful launch in Greece at #24, it peaked at #8 in November.
