Portugal Full Year 2020: Renault Clio, Mercedes A-Class & Peugeot 2008 top market off -35%

The Portuguese new car market is hit full frontal by the Covid crisis in 2020 with sales off a ghastly -35% year-on-year to just 145.417 units vs. 223.799 in 2019. The brands podium is unchanged on last year with Renault (-35.8%) almost matching the market to 12.8% share, distancing Peugeot (-33%) and Mercedes (-17%). The latter improves from 7.4% to 9.5% share. BMW (-24.5%) is up two spots to #4, Nissan (-28.5%) is up three to #6 and Ford (-27.3%) up two to #10. In contrast, Fiat (-53.1%), Citroen (-41.1%) and Seat (-37.6%) freefall. Outside the Top 10, Aston Martin (+16.7%), Ferrari (+15.4%) and Porsche (+10.9%) are among rare gainers while Land Rover (-2.6%), Hyundai (-17%), Audi (-18.3%), DS (-20.8%), Skoda (-21%), Lamborghini (-21.1%) and Volvo (-23.4%) resist relatively well.
Over in the model ranking, the Renault Clio (-25%) secures an 8th straight annual win (no interruption since 2013) and 12th annual win in total (a series started in 1999). The Clio improves its share to 5.5% and topped the monthly charts seven times in 2020 vs. six in 2019. The Mercedes A-Class (-23.9%) also improves to 4.1% share, topping the monthly charts 3 times vs. 5 last year. The Peugeot 208 and Fiat 500 also each ranked #1 once this year. Only three vehicles drop by the single-digits in the Top 15 this year: the Peugeot 2008 (-4%) lifts five spots to land on the third step of the podium, the BMW 1 Series (-3.6%) is up 9 ranks to #7 and the Hyundai Kona (-5.9%) also up 9 to #15. The Ford Puma (#25) is the most successful 2020 launch, peaking at #7 in November and distancing the Mercedes GLB (#81) and Porsche Cayenne Coupe (#117).
