Netherlands Full Year 2020: Kia Niro, VW ID.3 and Hyundai Kona top market down -20%

The Kia Niro is the first Asian nameplate to top the annual Dutch charts.

In December 2020, carmakers rushed to register EVs so they could count as a 2020 sale and lower their average CO2 emissions, resulting in grossly inflated numbers and a market up 2.9% year-on-year on an already inflated December 2019 tally to 42.829 units. The VW ID.3 ends the month in first place with over 6.000 sales and 14.2% share, distancing the Hyundai Kona (+303.7%) at over 4.500 units and 10.6% share and the Tesla Model 3 (-67.3%) with just under 4.000 sales and 9.2% share. These three nameplates alone account for a 34% share of the Dutch market in December. The VW ID.4 lands directly at #4 and 5.6% share, the Polestar 2 is up 11 spots on November to a record #7 and 3.4% and the Aiways U5 surges 109 ranks on last month to #22 overall.

The VW ID.3 ranked #1 in October, November and December.

Over the Full Year 2020, Dutch new car sales drop a round -20% year-on-year to 356.051 units. Volkswagen (-5.9%) resists much better than the market, partly thanks to a supercharged December volume (see above) and improves its share from 10.7% to 12.5%. The hero of the year is Kia (+6%) scoring the only year-on-year gain in the Top 20 and soaring 6 spots to #2 with 7.5% of the market vs. 5.7% a year ago. Kia distances Peugeot (-18.4%) and Toyota (-15.8%) both in ok shape. Volvo (-0.9%), Skoda (-11.2%) and BMW (-18.8%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, MG (+116.5%), Ferrari (+52.6%), Fiat (+21.9%) and Bentley (+9.3%) post rare gains. Polestar lands at #23, Aiways at #33 and Cupra at #46.

The Hyundai Kona ranks #3 in 2020.

Over in the models ranking, for the first time an Asian nameplate is the best-seller in the Netherlands: the Kia Niro (+28.6%) up four spots to the 2020 pole position thanks to its green variants. The VW ID.3 lands directly in 2nd place overall, it topped the Dutch charts from October to December and is ideally placed for a 2021 top spot. The Hyundai Kona (+51.2%) is up 9 ranks on 2019 to #3 overall, distancing the VW Polo (-30.5%) down two to #4 and the Volvo XC40 (+90.1%) up 24 to #5. The Opel Corsa (+148.4%) does even better and surges 36 ranks to #6 overall. Leader in 2019, the Tesla Model 3 (-72%) drops to #7 the year. The Peugeot 208 (+39.5%) is the only additional gainer in the Top 10, boosted by its new EV version. Below the ID.3, the Polestar 2 (#37), VW ID.4 (#44) and Ford Puma (#50) are the most successful 2020 launches in the Netherlands.
