The Indonesian new vehicle market sinks -48.3% year-on-year in 2020 to just 532.027 wholesales vs. 1.030.126 in 2019. This is the lowest annual result since 2009. Retail sales resist slightly better at -44.6% to 578.327 units vs. 1.043.017 in 2019. Brand leader Toyota (-51.4%) falls faster than the market and sees its share reduced by almost two percentage points from 32.2% to 30.3%. It remains well above all other carmakers, starting with sister brand Daihatsu (-48.8%) at 17.1% share. Honda (-46.6%) remains in third place at 13.8% while Suzuki (-34.1%) scores the best hold in the Top 8 and overtakes Mitsubishi (-51.3%) to climb to #4. Below Fuso (-50%), Isuzu (-35%) passes Hino (-59.4%) to #7 and Nissan (-11.8%), sporting the smallest drop in the Top 10, comfortably overtakes Wuling (-70.5%) to #9. Kia lands at #16 and MG arrives at #21 with only one month of sales, December when it ranked #10 already. There are some rare gainers this year, but only among brands with 0.1% share or less: Peugeot (+64.3%), Volkswagen (+35.7%), Audi (+30.6%) and Renault (+25.4%). The retail Top 8 is identical to the wholesales ranking, with the only difference in the Top 10 being Wuling (-54.9%) remaining at #9 above Nissan (-41.1%).

The models ranking was very volatile all year and as a result the top sellers have been completely reshuffled. The Honda Brio (-41.9%) is up one spot on 2019 to take the annual lead for the first time and is followed by the Suzuki Carry Pikap (-27.7%) bolstered by a new generation. This means the 14-year reign of the Toyota Avanza (-58.6%) is ended. We at BSCB estimate that it is the first time in over 40 years that a Toyota model isn’t atop the Indonesian charts, in essence and all logic since the Toyota Kijang took the lead in 1978 according to our estimates. Toyota monopolises the remainder of the Top 5 with the Rush (-52.3%) and Kijang Innova (-47.9%). In a year that favoured Light Commercial Vehicles, the Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap (-33.9%) and Mitsubishi L-300 Pikap (-43.4%) post the best holds in the remainder of the Top 10. The best-selling 2020 launch is the Suzuki XL7 landing directly at #16 with 1.8% share, followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross at #43, Kia Seltos at #53 and Mazda CX-30 at #58.
