Thanks to our partnership with SMMT, we can share with you a zoom in on England as a UK nation, keep in mind overall UK sales figures have already been analysed in our UK Full Year 2019 update. New car sales in England sink -29.8% year-on-year in 2020 to just 1.403.945 units, that’s the largest drop of any UK nation. One element that has an impact on the England ranking is the fact that most company leasing and rental car purchases are centralised in England, meaning models successful with fleet are likely to see their position improved here vs. the overall UK ranking.

The Ford Fiesta (-32.5%) is the most popular vehicle in England for at least the 8th consecutive year and despite a ghastly drop. Like in 2019 it distances the VW Golf (-20.1%) which manages to hold onto the 2nd spot unlike in the UK overall. The Vauxhall Corsa (-17.4%) leaps up 3 spots on 2019 to land at #3 vs. #2 in the UK. The rest of the Top 9 mimics the UK order, with the Ford Focus (-26.8%), Mercedes A-Class (-26.3%), Nissan Qashqai (-31.7%), Mini (-17.1%) and VW Polo (-22.8%). But at an estimated 10th place we have the Tesla Model 3 which doesn’t make it into the UK Top 10. Note in December the VW ID.3 was #3 vs. #4 in the UK overall and the Jaguar i-Pace was #8 whereas it ranked outside of the UK Top 10.

Previous month: UK nations November 2020: Ford Puma #1 in Wales, BMW 1 Series, Peugeot 208 and Renault Captur secure podium finishes

England (UK) 2018: First podium for the Nissan Qashqai (-23.1%) despite freefall
