Bulgaria Full Year 2020: Renault Clio and Dacia Dokker top freefalling market (-37.2%)

The Bulgarian new car market freefalls -37.2% year-on-year in 2020 to 27.032 units, one of the steepest falls recorded this year. One element of explanation is that re-exports to other European Union countries, a major influence on Bulgarian new car sales, were made more difficult by border restrictions this year. As a result they account for “only” 11% of the market this year, with Nissan (1.041), Renault (483) and Dacia (385) being the most active volume-wise.
In the brands ranking, Dacia (-33.2%) resists better than the market and improves its share from 12.7% to 13.5%. Renault (-16.7%) and Skoda (-25.5%) do even better to 11.8% and 10.2% respectively. In an unchanged Top 5 vs. 2019, Toyota (-30.8%) and Volkswagen (-35.8%) follow. Peugeot (-32.7%) overtakes Nissan (-44.2%) to claim the 6th spot while BMW (-28.2%) is up 3 spots to #9 and Mercedes (-4.5%) sports the best hold in the Top 10 and climbs 6 ranks to #10. Other good performers in context include Great Wall (stable), Mitsubishi (-1.7%), Porsche (-10.2%) and Audi (-13.8%).
For the first time since 2016, we can share with you a models ranking for the Full Year in Bulgaria. The Renault Clio (5.4%) and Dacia Dokker (5.3%) advance to the top spots at the last minute, as the Nissan Qashqai (5.2%) was still leading by end-November. It can reasonably be assumed that the majority of Qashqai registered in Bulgaria were then re-exported. The Skoda Octavia and Dacia Duster rounds out the Top 5 above the Toyota Corolla and Dacia Sandero. Notice also the Renault Master at #8, the Toyota Yaris at #10, Toyota C-HR at #15 and RAV4 at #16.
