Romania October/November 2020: Renault, Jeep, Suzuki, Fiat stand out in positive market

Renault Romanian sales are up 100.4% in October and 23.7% in November.

In October, the Romanian new car market lifts 17.6% year-on-year to 12.523 units, leading to a year-to-date tally off -27.9% to 97.054. Dacia (+9.4%) trails the market and sees its share reduce to 32.3% vs. 34.7% year-to-date, but Renault (+100.4%) exactly doubles its sales year-on-year and climbs to #2 YTD as a result. Volkswagen (+42.9%) also impresses at #4 as does Toyota (+24.6%) at #6 but it’s Jeep (+1656.3%) and Suzuki (+192.1%) that post the largest gains among the top 10 brands. Model-wise the Dacia Logan (+26.6%) is in runout mode before the arrival of the new generation at the end of the year, the Dacia Duster (-6.1%) climbs one spot on last month to #2, dislodging the Dacia Sandero (+9.9%). The hero of the month is the Jeep Renegade (+2442.9%) up 18 spots on September to #4 – we suspect FCA may have used Romania for re-exports this month – with the Renault Clio (+416%), Captur (+381.2%) and Suzuki Vitara (+210.7%) also up spectacularly in the remainder of the Top 10.

In November, Romanian sales stabilise to +1.2% at 13.253 units, meaning the year-to-date tally is now down -25.4% to 110.307. Dacia (-2.5%) goes against the grain with a small decline at 33.1% share vs. 31.3% so far in 2020, Renault (+23.7%) continues to evolve way above its year-ago level, distancing Skoda (+9%), Volkswagen (+8.9%) and Ford (-29.3%). Fiat (+297.9%), Peugeot (+121.2%) and Suzuki (+77.8%) secure the largest upticks in the Top 10. In the models ranking, the Dacia Logan (+8.4%) continues to outpace the market above the Duster (-4.3%) and Sandero (-17.9%). The Peugeot 2008 (+930.8%), Renault Captur (+65%) and Clio (+34.8%) also shine, the Ford Puma is up two spots to a record 6th place and the Fiat 500L makes an appearance in the Top 10, likely fuelled by re-exports.
