Belgium September 2020: Mercedes (+17.8%) scores first win in first market gain since January (+1%)

Mercedes is the best-selling brand in Belgium in September.

Now with Top 10 models ranking.

The August 2020 post has now been updated with the YTD Top 10 models.

The Belgian new car market manages its first year-on-year gain since last January at a timid +1% to 36.083 units in September, leading to a year-to-date tally down -24% to 333.607. Mercedes (+17.8%) leaps two spots on August to conquer the brands pole position for the first time since we at BSCB started following Belgium monthly in January 2016. Volkswagen (+6%) also outpaces the market and gains two ranks on last month to #2 but remains well below its YTD share level at 8.2% vs. 9.7%. Leader last month, BMW (+17.5%) completes an entirely overachieving podium.

In a month favouring the premium Germans, Audi (+58.9%) is the best performer in the Top 14, but all other Top 13 brands bar Skoda (+4.3%) are in negative, with Opel (-40.2%), Citroen (-23.2%), Volvo (-22%) and Renault (-18%) hit hardest. Further down, notice Alfa Romeo (+177.8%), Jeep (+169.7%), Suzuki (+146.7%), Mitsubishi (+112.5%), Ssangyong (+72.7%), Land Rover (+57.4%), Kia (+42.8%), Nissan (+35.6%), Honda (+33.3%), Jaguar (+28.7%), Subaru (+25.8%) and Fiat (+12.1%) all posting very satisfying gains.

In the models ranking, the Mercedes A-Clsss (+44.8%) climbs up two spots on last month to a fantastic 4th Belgian pole position in the past 13 months,  an outstanding feat right there. The Peugeot 208, Volvo XC40 and VW Golf (-36.9%) round out the Top 10, meaning the Golf is in danger of losing the 2020 top spot from the Mercedes A-Class as the two vehicles now stand just 307 sales apart and the odds a not in favour go the VW Golf now that the same-size VW ID electric  is available in dealerships across the continent.
