Vietnam July 2020: VinFast holds onto 7th spot in market down -9.7%

Local carmaker VinFast holds 6.5% share and ranks 7th in July. 

New vehicle sales in Vietnam edge down -9.7% year-on-year in July to 24.065 units, leading to a year-to-date tally down -27.7% to 131.248 according to VAMA. These figures climb to 33.885 and 173.413 respectively once adding Hyundai and VinFast who report sales separately and whose exclusive July figures we can share with you this month. These new-look charts show Hyundai once again very dominant at 22.4% are above Toyota (-28%) at 15.7% and Thaco-Kia (+12.3%) at 15.4%. Mazda (+2.1%) and even more strikingly Mitsubishi (+44.4%) defy the negative market to score year-on-year upticks in the remainder of the Top 5. Ford (-20.1%) rallies back up two spots on June to #6 while local manufacturer VinFast remains in 7th place with 6.5% share vs. 6.8% in June and 8.1% in May, hovering around 2.200 monthly sales for the past three months. Suzuki (+15.4%) and Isuzu (+13.2%) are also up in the Top 10’s tail end but Honda (-58.4%) crashes.

Model-wise, the Toyota Vios (+17%) confirms it is the favourite vehicle of Vietnamese buyers, followed by the Hyundai Accent up 3 spots on June to reclaim the #2 spot it holds YTD. The Mitsubishi Xpander (+55.7%) repeats at #3 while the VinFast Fadil ranks 4th for the third straight month and the Hyundai Grand i10 rounds out the Top 5. The Kia Cerato (+76.5%) and Mazda CX-5 (+50.7%) both score spectacular gains but the Ford Ranger (-20.1%) underperforms in the remainder of a Top 10 where the Hyundai Santa Fe and Tucson also slide in. The Mitsubishi Outlander (+66.1%) and Suzuki Ertiga (+49.2%) also impress further down, while the VinFast Lux A2.0 drops 7 spots on June to #24 and the Lux SA2.0 is off 5 ranks to #28.
