Mexico July 2020: Chevrolet Onix breaks into Top 5, Hyundai Creta into Top 10 in struggling market (-31%)

The Chevrolet Onix secures its first Top 5 finish in Mexico.

The Mexican new light vehicle market is slowly climbing up the recovery track with July volumes down another -31% year-on-year to 72.897, a slight improvement on June (-40.9%) that leads to a year-to-date tally down -31.6% to 509.342. For once Nissan (-28.6%) manages to lose slightly less ground than the market to hold its share at 20.6% vs. 20.2% so far this year. Chevrolet (-31.1%) almost exactly matches the market drop rate, settling in 2nd place with 15.6%s are while Volkswagen (-38.7%), Toyota (-32.1%) and Kia (-26.4%) ensure the Top 5 is identical to June and YTD. In the remainder of the Top 10, Renault (-14.1%) and Hyundai (-19.5%) score the best holds, the French carmaker returning among Mexico’s ten favourite brands a sa result. Below, Porsche (+42.9%), Volvo (+13.9%), Jaguar (+10%) and Subaru (+7.5%) post the only year-on-year gains in market while Jeep (-8%), Peugeot (-8.2%), Mercedes (-13.3%), Ram (-14.5%) and Audi (-16.7%) also resist relatively well.

Over in the models ranking, the Nissan Versa (-38.3%) easily retains the top spot despite a steep fall, just as the Nissan Pickup (-24.8%) overtakes the Chevrolet Beat (-40.4%) for 2nd place and the Nissan March (-21.3%) edges up one spot on June to #4. After a very late launch last January and three consecutive months at #8, the Chevrolet Onix steps up 3 ranks on last month to break into the Mexican Top 5 for the first time at #5, toppling the Kia Rio (-27.3%). The Nissan Sentra (+52.4%) soars 7 spots to #8 but the best performance near the top is delivered by the Hyundai Creta (+151.1%), up 6 on June to score its first ever Mexican Top 10 finish. The Honda City (+25.8%) also shines at #12 while the Kia Seltos is up 6 to #15, the VW T-Cross up 17 to a new record #21 but the Mazda CX-30 is down 19 to #52.
