Lebanon 7 months 2020: Mitsubishi (+76.8%) defies market imploding -65.4%, MG lands in Top 10

Mitsubishi goes from 1.8% share a year ago to 9.4% in 2020.

The Lebanese new car market suffers the combined effects of an economic meltdown and the Covid-19 crisis with sales down a ghastly -65.4% year-on-year over the first 7 months of 2020 to just 7.557 units. After a First Quarter down -57.1%, April sales implode -76.6% to 781 vs. 3.339 a year ago, May is off -76.3% to 740 vs. 3.124, June is down -54.1% to 1.650 and July crumbles -77.8% to 748 vs. 3.363. Despite falling much faster than the market at -76.1%, Toyota remains the best-selling carmaker in the country so far in 2020 with 21.5% share, keeping Nissan (-61.9%) at a fair distance at 19.9%. Kia (-62.9%) rounds out the podium above the hero of the year so far: Mitsubishi surging 76.8% year-on-year to 9.4% share vs. just 1.8% a year ago. Suzuki (-42.8%) and Lexus (-46.4%) also resist well while MG lands directly inside the Top 10 at #10 with 2.4% share. Hyundai (-86.2%), Chevrolet (-72.7%) and Renault (-66.9%) struggle. Below, Maserati (+263.6%), Alfa Romeo (+50%) and Citroen (-2%) perform best.

MG is already inside the Top 10 brands in 2020.

Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Land Cruiser (-83.3%) and Nissan Patrol (-74.1%) manage to remain on top but endure the steepest falls in the Top 6 and see their share thaw from 13.3% and 8.2% to 6.4% and 6.1% respectively. The Toyota Yaris (-48.7%) slices its 2019 volume in two but climbs 3 spots to land on the third step of the podium. The Mitsubishi L200 (+871%) is up 10-fold and 91 ranks to shoot up to #4 overall with the Nissan Micra (-17.1%) and Kicks (-1.3%) in tow. The Suzuki Swift (-12.1%) also climbs into the Lebanese Top 10 over the period. No less than 8 new launches manage to crack the Lebanese Top 100: the Kia Pegas (#11), MG ZS (#25), Toyota Wigo (#33), MG RX5 (#38), Hyundai Reina (#41), MG5 (#61), Citroen C3 Aircross (#96) and MG RX8 (#97).
