Mexico June 2020: Ram (+27.8%) blissfully unaware of bogged down market (-40.9%)

Ram sales surge 27.8% year-on-year in a market down -40.9%

The Mexican new light vehicle market continue to slowly walk back up at -40.9% year-on-year in June to 62.837 units, leading to a First Half volume down -31.7% to 436.445. This is a better result than May (-59%) and April (-64.5%) but business activity in the country remains constrained by a galloping Covid-19 pandemic now totalling 344.224 cases and 39.184 deaths, the latter figure being the 4th highest globally below the US, Brazil and the UK. Nissan (-46.3%) is back to trailing the market and drops to 18.5% share vs. 20.2% so far in 2020, whereas Chevrolet (-38.1%) does a little better at 15.2%. Volkswagen (-51.7%) and Toyota (-42.9%) both underperform while Kia (-40.9%) exactly matches the market’s drop rate at #5. Ram (+27.8%) blissfully ignores the depressed context and scores the only year-on-year gain in the Top 25 – let alone a double-digit one – and one of only two in the entire market alongside Porsche (+6.7%). Mazda (-2.3%) also stuns with stabilised sales at #6 and 6.6% share vs. 4.9% YTD.

The Kia Rio is up to a record 4th place in Mexico.

In the models ranking, the Nissan Versa (-45.5%) has no trouble staying on top above the Chevrolet Beat (-44.8%) and Nissan Pickup (-38.1%), returning the podium to its YTD order. The Kia Rio (-26.7%) is up two spots to break into the Mexican Top 5 for the very first time at #4, toppling the Nissan March (-53.2%) and Chevrolet Aveo (-64.6%). The Ram 1500-4000 (+85.3%), Hyundai Creta (+62.2%), Mazda3 (+33.9%), Honda City (+19.7%) and Chevrolet Silverado (+16.2%) brilliantly post the only upticks in the Top 45. The Chevrolet Onix remains at #8 to top all recent launches (<12 months) ahead of the Kia Seltos (#21), Mazda CX-30 (#33), VW T-Cross (#38), VW Virtus (#58) and Mercedes GLB (#90).
