Argentina June 2020: Chevrolet Onix now #1 YTD, VW T-Cross in Top 5, sales up 0.8%
The Chevrolet Onix is now the #1 vehicle in Argentina in 2020.
New vehicle sales in Argentina are back in positive for the first time in over two years (since May 2018) at +0.8% year-on-year to 36.228 units, however June 2019 was depleted -43.9% on the year prior and this post Covid-19 recovery may be short-lived as most car dealerships in the Greater Buenos Aires region are closed anew under a new quarantine until at least July 17. For now, the year-to-date tally is down -38.8% to 152.092 units. Volkswagen (+30.8%) vastly outpaces the market with a fantastic gain leading it to 17.8% share vs. 14.9% so far this year, distancing Renault (-9.8%) in difficulty year-on-year but scoring a strong share at 12.9%. Chevrolet (+7.8%) and Fiat (+33.7%) follow with stunning upticks, but Toyota (-31.2%) and Ford (-24.6%) continue to freefall. Jeep (+45.5%) signs the largest gain in the Top 10 with Peugeot (+9.3%) and Citroen (+7.8%) also very strong. Below, Mitsubishi (+1550%), Lexus (+820%), Ram (+273.3%), Alfa Romeo (+200%), DS (+140%), Foton (+100%), Audi (+82.5%), JAC (+80.8%), Mercedes (+50.6%), Dongfeng (+42.4%), BMW (+29.2%) and Geely (+29.2%) stand out with extravagant gains.
In the models ranking, the Chevrolet Onix (+46%) reclaims the top spot off the Toyota Hilux (+13.3%) for the fourth time in the past 5 months, earning the #1 spot YTD also in the process. The VW Gol (+57.2%) even manages to slide in between the two star nameplates for the month at #2. The VW Amarok (+64.9%) for its part advances to #4 for the third time in the past 9 months, that’s its 2nd highest ever monthly ranking in Argentina below the 3rd spot it reached once: in November 2015. The VW T-Cross celebrates one year in market by cracking the Argentinean Top 5 for the first time at #5, while the Ford Ranger (+49.1%), VW Polo (+43.5%) and Peugeot 208 (+4.5%) are also solid in the remainder of the Top 10.
