The Romanian new car market only marginally improves on April (-50.3%) with May sales down -45% year-on-year to 7.155 units, pulling the year-to-date tally down -31.4% to 29.355. Homegrown brand leader Dacia (-34.9%) resists a lot better and pushes to 29.9% share vs. 27.8% so far this year, but the true hero of this month’s brands charts is Hyundai (+5.5%) managing a market-defying gain, one of only 3 in the entire market alongside Lexus (+7.1%) and Land Rover (+2.1%), and surging 6 spots on April to #2 overall for the second time in the past 9 months. Toyota (-6.9%) also secures a splendid hold whereas all remaining Top 10 members fall faster the market with Volkswagen (-62.8%), Skoda (-57.2%) and Renault (-52.7%) hit the hardest.

The Dacia Logan (-51.1%) has no trouble securing a 189th straight monthly win (no interruption since its launch back in September 2004) but this time the Dacia Sandero (+0.7%) steps up to #2 ahead of the Dacia Duster (-26.1%). The Hyundai Tucson (+9.6%) soars 7 spots on April to #4 just as the Dacia Dokker (+22.3%) and Toyota Corolla (+7.8%) also sport year-on-year gains in the remainder of the Top 10. The Peugeot 3008 (-7.1%) surges 10 ranks on last month to #6 whereas the Skoda Octavia (-74.2%), Renault Megane (-58.2%) and Renault Clio (-57.3%) crumble. The Ford Puma tops recent launches, breaking into the Romanian Top 20 for the first time and distancing the Skoda Scala (#34), Kamiq (#37) and Mazda CX-30 (#49).
