Ireland May 2020: Volkswagen places Tiguan and Golf atop market down -72.3%

The VW Tiguan is the best-selling vehicle in Ireland in May.

After almost coming to a complete stop in April (-96.1%), Irish new car sales fall another -72.3% year-on-year in May to just 1.751 registrations as the country only partially eased its COVID-19 lockdown on May 18. The year-to-date tally is now down -34.6% to 51.904. Volkswagen (-68.7%) and BMW (-72.4%) both shoot up 11 spots on April to land at #1 and #2 brands this month, while Hyundai (-67.2%) is down one to #3 and Toyota (-78.3%) down 3 to #4. Nissan (-67.5%), Renault (-70.2%) and Skoda (-70.5%) also manage to outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10 but Peugeot (-78.4%), Ford (-77.4%) and Kia (-76.1%) weren’t that lucky.

Tesla (+2700%) is down 4 spots on April to #12, with Land Rover (-27.1%), Mini (-31.8%), Volvo (-62.2%) and Lexus (-66.7%) posting the best holds further down. Volkswagen places the Tiguan (-55.3%) and Golf (-62.2%) atop the models ranking while the BMW 3 Series (-64%) is up 63 spots on April to #3 ahead of the Hyundai Kona (-59%). The Tesla Model 3 remains at #5, distancing the Hyundai Tucson (-56.8%), Toyota Corolla (-82.9%) and Ford Focus (-75.3%).
