Ukraine March 2020: Renault (+19.6%) shoots up to 19.6% share, ignores market down -14.8%

The Renault Duster is the best-selling vehicle in Ukraine in March.

As of March 31, there were only 669 reported COVID-19 cases in Ukraine, and although some restrictive measures were taken the new car market wasn’t much affected at -14.8% year-on-year in March to 6.244 units. The year-to-date tally remains in positive territory for now at +10.5% and 20.279 registrations. However April is likely to show a much steeper drop, as coronavirus cases soared to 10.861 by April 30 and a stricter lockdown was imposed.

For now, Renault (+19.6%) swims upstream with a spectacular gain to hit 19.6% share, almost double the #2 Toyota (-20.8%) at 10.6%. Renault therefore snaps the YTD lead off Toyota at 17.3% of the market vs. 14.6%. Kia (-18.9%) closes the podium like last month, distancing Nissan (-37.7%), Hyundai (-24.9%) and Skoda (-54.3%). Mazda is stable at #7 with Audi (+40.4%) up 10 spots on February to #10 and the only additional gainer in the Top 10. Below, Opel (+550%), Haval (+114.8%), Seat (+62.5%), Citroen (+38.7%), Peugeot (+15.3%), Subaru (+14.5%), Ford (+12%), Land Rover (+9.6%) and Mercedes (+4.3%) also shine.

Model-wise, the Renault Duster (+38.2%) storms back into pole position for the first time since January 2019, and also earns the YTD top spot, toppling the Toyota RAV4 (-18.1%). Note the Duster was already #1 in Ukraine over the Full Year 2018. The Kia Sportage (-6%) is up two spots on February to #2, ensuring with the RAV4 that the Ukrainian podium is 100% SUVs for the month. Renault justifies its brand leadership by also placing the Sandero (+20.2%) and Logan (-20.8%) inside the Top 5. The Mitsubishi Outlander (+72.3%) and Mazda CX-5 (+24.8%) also post spectacular gains in the Top 10, while the VW T-Roc tops recent launches at #32.
