Ukraine April 2020: Renault up to 21% share, Mercedes (+15.7%), BMW (-11.5%) solid in market down -46.9%

Mercedes is the only gainer in the Top 13 and ranks 6th in April.

With COVID-19 cases soaring from just 669 as of March 31 to 10.861 as of April 30 and 19.706 as of May 20, Ukraine was under strict lockdown measures for all of April, with the quarantine being first eased on May 11. On May 22, public transport and hotels are scheduled to be reopened. The Ukrainian new car market accordingly drops -46.9% year-on-year in April to 3.664 sales, tilting the year-to-date tally into negative at -1.2% to 23.943. Once again Renault (-30.8%) resists better than the market to shoot up to 21% share vs. 17.8% so far in 2020, while Toyota (-55.6%) and Kia (-59.4%) both lose share year-on-year but camp on their YTD position. Mercedes (+15.7%) is up 5 spots to #6 as it secures the only year-on-year gain in the Top 13, with BMW (-11.5%), Mazda (-15.2%) and Peugeot (-32.8%) also standing out in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Ravon (+3800%), Opel (+212.5%), Audi (+108.1%) and Haval (+100%) ignore the depleted context.

Model-wise, the Renault Duster (-43.6%) repeats at #1 for the first time ever in Ukraine, keeping the 2019 leader, the Kia Sportage (-59.6%) at bay. Renault places 3 nameplates in the April Top 4 alongside the Logan (-36.5%) and Sandero (+8.9%) which is the only gainer in the Top 6. It’s a good month for large and expensive SUVs in Ukraine: the BMW X5 (-24.6%) shoots up 21 spots on March to #6, the Mercedes GLE (+190.3%) is up 23 to #7 and the Toyota Prado (-51%) is up 10 to #9. Further down, the BMW X7 (+650%), Audi Q8 (+107.1%), Renault Kadjar (+72.2%), Porsche Cayenne (+25%), Peugeot 301 (+22.2%) and Mercedes GLS (+9.7%) make themselves noticed with market-defying gains.
