Tunisia January-April 2020: Chery Tiggo 2 first Chinese at #1

The Chery Tiggo 2 is the #1 model in Tunisia so far in 2020, #3 when adding all versions of each model.

Today we can share with you rare All-brands and All-models data for Tunisia over the first four months of 2020. 10.381 new light vehicles found a buyer over the period, but the monthly detail shows a complete halt in April due to the COVID-19 crisis: from 3.451 sales in January, 4.077 in February, the Tunisian market falls to 2.741 units in March and just 112 in April. Both brands and models rankings have been turned on their head in 2020, with Hyundai jumping from #6 over FY2019 to the lead so far this year ahead of Kia while Chery leaps up 10 spots to a fantastic third place with 8.2% share which is almost as much as the share all Chinese carmakers combined held in FY2019 (9.4%). So far in 2020, Chinese brands hold a record 14.6% of the Tunisian market. Citroen is up to #4 above Peugeot, Toyota and Volkswagen while Renault sinks from #3 in FY2019 to #9. Mahindra edges up to #11 while both Haval (#14) and Nissan (#15) gain 6 spots on their 2019 rankings.

The Haval H6 is up to #16 and #3 SUV.

Model-wise, we have an exclusive look at sales split by hatch, sedan and “Populaire” versions, the latter being discounted variants dedicated to buyers who haven’t renewed their car in the past 7 years and can prove they are earning less than 3.800 dinars per month (1.200€) for a single person and 5.700 (1.800€) for a couple. Splitting these versions gives a very surprising result: the Chery Tiggo 2 easily becomes the best-selling model in Tunisia with 5.6% share, mainly thanks to selling 2.3 times more than any other vehicle in the country in January. This is the first time in Tunisian history that a Chinese model leads the sales charts. The Kia Rio 5p at 5.1% share and Citroen C3 Populaire equal with the Hyundai Grand i10 at 3.8% complete the podium above the Hyundai i20. Last year’s leader the Renault Clio falls to #6, the Fiat Fiorino is up to #7, the Mahindra KUV100 ranks 8th and the Haval H6 shines at #15 overall.

The Dongfeng S50 lands inside the Top 40.

Adding all versions for each model returns a different order but still shows wild differences vs. the FY2019 chart: the Hyundai Grand i10 takes the lead at 7.1% of the market vs. #10 in 2019, the Kia Rio stays #2 at 5.6% while the Chery Tiggo 2 leaps up 26 spots to #3 overall. The Citroen C3 is up 4 to #4, the Renault Clio down 4 to #5, while the Fiat Fiorino, Hyundai i20, Kia Picanto, Toyota Yaris and VW Polo all manage to slide into the Top 10, kicking the Mahindra KUV100 out. Among Chinese models, the Chery QQ is up 3 to #12, the Haval H6 up 4 to #16 and #3 SUV in the country below the Chery Tiggo 2 and Mahindra KUV100, the MG ZS down 20 to #37, the Dongfeng S50 is at #41, the Geely GC6 at #44, the Great Wall M4 at #45 and the Great Wall Wingle 5 at #47. Finally, notice the Peugeot Pickup, a rebadged Dongfeng Rich, at #40.
