New Caledonia (France) April 2020: Toyota up 51.3% in market down -47.2%, places 6 models in Top 8

Toyota soars to 36% share in New Caledonia in April.

New Caledonia is a French overseas archipelago located north-east of Australia. Unlike metropolitan France where the COVID-19 lockdown lasted until May 11, here businesses reopened as early as April 20. After March sales down a moderate -25.9%, April deliveries drop -47.2% year-on-year to 336 units, pulling the year-to-date tally down -15.5% to 2.046. This is to be compared with -72.2% in March and -88.8% in April in metropolitan France.

Toyota (+51.3%) goes completely against the market trend to fly off to a mammoth 36% share, annihilating Dacia (-54.5%), Ford (-44.2%), Citroen (-43.6%), Hyundai (-48.6%) and Kia (-50%). These five brands put together still sell less than Toyota alone this month. Peugeot (-82.9%) and Renault (-78%) are hit the hardest in the Top 10.

Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (+87%) surges to 12.8% share above the Dacia Duster (-50.9%), the latter snapping back the YTD lead off the Peugeot 208 (-87%) which fell out the Top 25 for the month. The Toyota C-HR is up 10 spots on March to #3, the Yaris up 16 to #5, the RAV4 up to #6, the Rush up 9 to #7, the Land Cruiser up to #8 and the Prado up to #14.
