Exclusive to BestSellingCarsBlog, we can share with you today and for the 9th year in a row official new car sales data for the Principality of Monaco. You won’t find this data anywhere else. Monaco is always a fascinating market to follow as it is an insight into what cars some of the richest people on earth are buying. The Monaco new car market edges up 0.6% year-on-year in 2019 to 3.202 units. Mercedes (+3.6%) easily outpace the market to score a 6th consecutive year in the brands pole position with an improved 16.4% share, but Audi (-1.7%) and Porsche (-15.4%) are in negative in a podium identical to 2018.

Ferrari holds 2.8% of the Monaco car market in 2019.

Both Land Rover (+0.6%) and BMW (+12.2%) leapfrog past Smart (-3.9%) while Mini (+11.4%) is up two spots to #8. Just outside the Top 10, Ferrari (+28.2%) swap ranks with Bentley (-1.4%) at #11 and 2.8% share and #12 and 2.2% respectively, by far the highest brands ranking reached by both brands worldwide. For its part Lamborghini (+58.1%) secures a 5th straight double-digit gain to shoot up 8 spots on 2018 and break into the Top 20 at #16 overall with 1.5% share. That means one in every 67 new cars registered in Monaco in 2019 is a Lamborghini. Notice also Tesla up 422.2% to #18, Maserati up 111.1% to #23, Rolls Royce up 48% to #24 and Alpine up 41.7% to #33.

Among mass market brands, Suzuki (+63.6%), Dacia (+44.4%), Skoda (+40%), Kia (+36.6%) and Hyundai (+13.3%) impress. Despite Monaco being nested within southeastern France, French carmakers have traditionally been weak here, mainly because they have no dealerships in the Principalty. Cars therefore need to be bought in France (Nice or Cannes) then registered in Monaco. As such, the French (-16.9%) only hold 4.6% of the Monaco market vs. 5.6% in 2018, meaning Porsche sold twice as many cars in Monaco in 2018 than all French carmakers put together.

The Smart Fortwo is the best-selling vehicle in Monaco in 2019.

Model-wise, the Smart Fortwo (-4.6%) is estimated to reclaim the top spot but it is followed by a very impressive string of six double-digit+ gainers: the Mercedes A-Class (+137.5%) surges 6 spots to #2, the Audi Q3 (+1816.7%) is up 93 to #3 while the Porsche Macan (+62.1%), Cayenne (+25%) and Mercedes GLC (+10.1%) also impress just below. Porsche places a third nameplate in the Top 10: the 911 (-57.7%) while the Range Rover Sport (+20%) remains at #9 and the Audi A3 (-39.4%) is down seven spots to round out the Top 10. Among new launches, the Tesla Model 3 lands at #22 whole the Lamborghini Urus breaks into the Top 40 at #36 and the Lexus UX arrives at #45. The Peugeot 3008 (+128.6%) is the best-selling French model at #27 and the only one managing to crack the Monaco Top 50…
