World Full Year 2019: Discover all the #1 models in 177 markets

The Toyota Hilux tops an estimated 35 markets worldwide.

It’s time for an update on the best-selling nameplates in 177 markets around the planet, detailing how many countries in which a specific model ranked #1. In 2019, 65 nameplates have at least won one market in the world. This list is once again topped by the Toyota Hilux with an estimated 35 pole positions worldwide. This information is exclusive to BSCB, you won’t find it anywhere else. Note this article isn’t a reflection of the highest worldwide sales volumes which will be the subject of a separate Full Year 2019 report. Our methodology is the following: when official data is available, Full Year 2019 rankings are used. If no 2019 data is available, the most recent data is used and for the countries with no data at all, the #1 model is estimated based on thorough observations in these countries’ streets via local BSCB contacts and/or recent YouTube videos.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 is estimated to be #1 in 11 markets, 8 confirmed.

Toyota places 15 different nameplates in pole position in at least one country, with no less than 81 markets, or 46% of all markets included in this study, having a Toyota as their best-seller. As it has been the case for over fifteen years now, the Toyota Hilux is the one model ranking #1 the most often with an estimated 35 countries falling under its spell this year (2017: 34). A caveat to this figure is the fact that 14 out of these 35 winning markets are estimated wins, but even when removing the estimates the Toyota Hilux is still by far the most prolific winner with 21 confirmed conquered countries, the most of any year since we started tracking these results (2017: 18, 2015: 21, 2014: 19, 2013: 8).

The Skoda Octavia is once again the most prolific winner in Europe (8).

In second place we find the the world best-seller, the Toyota Corolla, with 10 wins including 5 confirmed, that’s one more than over H2 in each category. It now distances the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 with 9 estimated wins but including more confirmed wins than the Corolla at 8 – 7 of them in the Middle East. The Skoda Octavia follows with 8 confirmed wins all in Europe, making it the most prolific winner in Europe by far. The Renault Clio, even though it lost its French crown, adds up to 5 wins including two French overseas territories, equal with the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 and Prado, both also at 5 wins.

The Tesla Model 3 makes its first entrance in the winners list.

5 models score 4 wins in 2019: the Isuzu D-Max (3 confirmed), VW Golf (4 confirmed), Dacia Duster (3 confirmed), Dacia Sandero (3 confirmed) and Ford Ranger (3 confirmed). 6 nameplates notch 3 wins, including the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi L200 and Hyundai Tucson, new at this level. 15 models manage 2 wins including a new entrant: the Tesla Model 3 Netherlands and Norway), and 32 models win just 1 market in the world in 2019, with five newcomers: the Jeep Wrangler (Virgin Islands (USA), Khazar LD/SD (aka Iran Khodro Dena, Azerbaijan), Toyota Tacoma (American Samoa), Volvo S/V60 (Sweden) and VW T-Roc (estimated #1 in San Marino).
