Vietnam March 2020: Toyota Vios and Ford Ranger top market down -40.7%

The Ford Ranger leaps to #2 in Vietnam in March.

Due to its proximity to China, the coronavirus spread into Vietnam as early as January 23, but the country’s response to the outbreak has received acclaim for its effectiveness and transparency and as of April 12 there were just 265 confirmed cases, with 146 recoveries and 0 deaths. The Vietnamese economy has however been hit hard by quarantine measures and the temporary hold on tourism. As a result new vehicle sales in March freefall -40.7% year-on-year to 19.154, leading to a year-to-date tally down -32.6% to 52.557.

Toyota (-43.3%) remains the best-selling manufacturer in the country at 26.9% share vs. 26.2% YTD, followed at a distance by Thaco-Kia (-24.9%) at 20.5% both in March and YTD. Honda (-27.5%) leaps two spots on February to #3, distancing Mitsubishi (-31.2%), Ford (-45.8%) and Mazda (-48.7%). Hino (+55%), Isuzu (+22.6%), Samco (+21.7%) and Suzuki (+1.9%) post the only year-on-year gains in market this month. The Toyota Vios (-27.5%) easily remains the most popular nameplate in the country at 12% share, while the Ford Ranger (+33.5%) leaps up 3 spots on last month to #2, overtaking the Mitsubishi Xpander (-55.3%). The Suzuki Super Carry (+184.5%) lodges the only additional gain in the Top 10, while the new Kia Soluto is down one spot on February to #9.
