Spain February 2020: Kia (+24.1%), Toyota (+21.8%), Fiat Tipo (#5) superstars in market down -5.1%
The Kia Stonic soars to an all-time record 12th place in Spain in February.
The Spanish new car market slightly slows down its fall in February at -5.1% to 98.221 registrations, the slowest February since 2016. The year-to-date tally is now down -6.2% to 187.871. Once again the reading by channel is rather depressing, with private sales sinking -10.2% to 43.703 and 44.5% share vs. 47.1% a year ago, company sales edging down -0.9% to 32.716 and 33.3% vs. 31.9% and rental sales the only ones up at +0.2% to 21.752 and 22.2% vs. 21% in February 2019. Year-to-date, private sales plummet down -12.2% to 86.755 and 46.2% share vs. 49.3% over the same period in 2019, company sales gain 1.9% to 65.891 and 35.1% vs. 32.3% and rental sales drop -4.5% to 35.225 and 18.7% vs. 18.4%.
Peugeot (-1.2%) continues to dominate the Spanish brands ranking, scoring a 6th win in the past 7 months. Seat (+3.3%) stays in 2nd place while Citroen (+1.4%) steps up two spots on January to #3, distancing Volkswagen (+2.7%) and Renault (-10.7%). Kia (+24.1%) and Toyota (+21.8%) are by far the best performers in the Top 10 and the only ones gaining more than 3.5% year-on-year. If Audi (+2.4%) manages to edge up, Opel (-23.9%) and Nissan (-22.9%) both sink in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Porsche (+174.7%), DS (+70.4%), Land Rover (+54.9%), Skoda (+36.9%), Lexus (+30.6%), Mini (+21.3%), BMW (+13.1%) and Cupra (+12.8%) stand out whereas Tesla (-42%) is already in dire straits.
Even though it is starting to feel the heat from a completely renewed Juke, the Nissan Qashqai (-25.3%) manages to win the month in Spain, also despite losing 1/4 of its February 2019 volume. The Seat Leon (-4.2%) is luring less than 100 units below and as a result takes the YTD lead with a meagre 7-units advantage over the Qashqai. The Opel Corsa (-2.6%) is up 3 spots on January to land on the third step of the podium, while the Seat Ateca (+25.4%) repeats at a record 4th place. The Fiat Tipo (+4%) is up 100 ranks (!) on January to rank 5th overall, smashing its previous record of #11 established exactly a year ago in February 2019. The Seat Arona (+1.9%) is also solid at #6 while the Kia Stonic (+126.8%) also pulverises its Spanish ranking record to #12 vs. #23 in March 2019. The Toyota Corolla (#9) tops recent launches ahead of the VW T-Cross (#14), Skoda Kamiq (#49), Ford Puma (#50) and Kia Xceed (#51).
