Romania February 2020: Dacia down -45.8%, Hyundai up 6.8% in market down -26.8%

The Hyundai Kona signs its first Top 10 finish in Romania.

New car sales in Romania implode -26.8% year-on-year in February to 8.836 units, pulling the year-to-date volume down -18.1% to 21.325. The same way as homegrown market leader Dacia was responsible for the 37.5% market surge a year ago in February 2019, it is also almost solely to blame for this month’s ghastly performance: Dacia sinks -45.8% to 24.6% in February. Hyundai (+6.8%) is the only Top 5 carmaker in positive, with Renault (-21.8%), Volkswagen (-12.8%) and Skoda (-3.2%) all skidding down. Ssangyong (+137.5%), Mini (+105.9%), Porsche (+105.9%), Fiat (+61.3%), Seat (+58.8%), Land Rover (+35.3%), Jeep (+23.1%), Kia (+16.9%), Mercedes (+15%), BMW (+10.9%) and Suzuki (+8.1%) are among the greatest gainers further down.

Model-wise, despite Dacia’s dwindling sales this month it still monopolises its home podium with the Logan (-58.7%), Duster (-23.5%) and Sandero (-35.9%) in charge. The Skoda Octavia (-4%) and Renault Clio (+19.1%) are the best of the rest like last month, while the Hyundai Kona (+213.8%) lurches up 10 spots on January to a record #6, its very first appearance inside the Romanian Top 10, the Suzuki SX4 (+122.7%) is up 15 to its first Top 10 finish since December 2013 at #7 and the Toyota Corolla (+150%) is up 20 ranks on last month to #9.
