Romania January 2020: VW Touareg in Top 10 in market down -10.5%

The Romanian new car market skids down -10.5% year-on-year in January to 12.489 units. Homegrown leader Dacia (-32.2%) pays the price of an unusually high score a year ago in January 2019 and falls to 28.6% share vs. 31.1% over the FY2019. In contrast Volkswagen (+69.7%) and Hyundai (+48.8%) posts outstanding gains and both fit within the Top 5, with Mercedes (+51.1%) up to #8. But Ford (-40.6%) and Nissan (-24%) are hit hard in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Porsche (+725%), Mini (+120%), Citroen (+96.4%), Fiat (+82.7%), Peugeot (+48.8%), Jeep (+40.9%), Kia (+39%) and Mitsubishi (+21.6%) stand out whereas Opel (-63.9%), Volvo (-59%) and Honda (-48.1%) implode.
Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (-51.5%) enjoys a of 185th consecutive monthly win (no interruption since its launch back in September 2004) despite losing over half its January 2019 volume, and is followed by the Dacia Sandero (+14.8%) – actually up year-on-year – and the Dacia Duster (-11.1%). The Skoda Octavia (+34.4%) and Hyundai i20 (+32.4%) also post fantastic gains in the remainder of the Top 10, but none as spectacular as the VW Touareg (+357.4%) almost multiplying its January 2019 sales by five and breaking into the Top 10 at #10 thanks to a new generation suddenly in stock. The Touareg’s previous monthly Romanian ranking record was #18 in October 2018 and to BSCB’s knowledge it’s the first time the Touareg cracks the Top 10 of a major European market. The Peugeot 3008 (+165.5%), Fiat Tipo (+114.6%), Hyundai Kona (+91.3%), VW Passat (+75.9%) and Hyundai i30 (+74%) also shine further down.
