Philippines Full Year 2019: Toyota up to 39.3% share, MG lands in Top 10 in market up 2%

Although up 2% year-on-year to 410.187 units in 2019 and above the 400.000 annual sales milestone for the 4th consecutive year and the 4th time in history, the Filipino new car market remains far below its all-time high of 473.943 registrations established in 2017. Brand leader Toyota (+5.9%) vastly outperforms the market and soars to 39.3% share whereas #2 Mitsubishi (-5.1%) drops to 15.6%. Nissan (+22.2%) posts the largest gain in the Top 8, overtaking Hyundai (-7.2%) to climb onto the podium while Suzuki (+21.2%) is up two spots to #5. Kia (+124.3%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year and breaks into the Top 10 at #10 but the big surprise inside the Filipino Top 10 this year is the direct landing of Chinese carmaker MG at #9 with over 5.000 sales, launching in the country with the MG 6, MG ZS and Roewe rebadges the MG 5 (Roewe i5) and RX5. Thanks to this arrival, Chinese manufacturers as a whole sure 91.4% to 10.255 sales and 2.5% share vs. 1.3% in 2018, helped by GAC (+693.9%), BAIC (+11%) and the arrival of Geely (#24). Premium fares are on a roll in the Philippines, with BMW (+81.1%), Jaguar/Land Rover (+28.2%), Audi/Porsche (+26.3%) and Mercedes (+19%) also posting fantastic gains.

Model-wise, the Toyota Vios (+28.9%) cements its lead at 8.1% share, celebrating 11 wins in the past 12 years, but the remainder of the Top 5 is completely reshuffled this year. The Toyota Hilux (+14%) and Innova (+14.4%) are both up two spots to #2 and #3 respectively, leapfrogging past the Toyota Fortuner (-13.9%) down two to #4 while the Mitsubishi Xpander (+41.4%) brilliantly breaks into the Top 5, ending the year only 1.757 units off a #2 ranking. The Nissan Navara (+17.9%), Mitsubishi Mirage G4 (+20.4%) and Toyota Rush (+41%) also gain significant group in 2019, as do the Nissan Terra (+152.2%), Mitsubishi Strada (+92.3%), Suzuki Ertiga (+37.3%) and Ford Ranger (+27.2%) just outside the Top 10. Two imports from China, the Hyundai Reina (#24) and Kia Soluto (#32) are estimated to land directly inside the Filipino Top 40.
