Papua New Guinea Full Year 2019: Toyota back above 50% share, Land Cruiser 70 reigns supreme

The Papua New Guinea (PNG) new car market bounces back in 2019, up 9.8% to 5.346, however still far from the high of 8.305 registered in 2014. Toyota (+10.7%) is back above the symbolic 50% share milestone at 50.2%, annihilating the competition led by Isuzu (+3.1%) at 15.6% and Nissan (+15.6%) at 9.8%. Chinese JMC (+50.8%), Kia (+50.7%), Mazda (+17%), Ford (+16.7%) and Hino (+11%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. In the models ranking, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 (+8%) remains untouchable, accounting for 46% of Toyota’s sales in the country and 23.3% of all vehicles sold in 2019. The Coaster (+38%), Hiace (+19.7%) and Hilux (+19.2%) are the brand’s next best-sellers.

As a reminder, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of the world’s least explored nations culturally and geographically. It occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea north of Australia, with the western half forming the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua. PNG is home to 8.6 million inhabitants, most of them living in customary communities which are as diverse as the 848 different languages listed for the country. PNG is one of the most rural countries in the world, with only 18% of the population living in urban centres, and one-third of the population living on less than US$1.25 per day.
