It’s another stunning year for the Romanian new car market, up 23.4% year-on-year in 2019 to 161.562 units. This marks a 6th consecutive year of double-digit gains since a low of 57.710 units back in 2013. The 2019 tally is the largest annual score since the all-time high of 343,080 registrations in 2008 which we remain a long way off from though. Romanian customers are flocking towards the best-sellers, with the podium brands all outpacing an already galloping market and holding 47.2% of the market vs. 44.8% in 2018. Homegrown market leader Dacia (+36.4%) is up to 31.1% share, Renault (+27.7%) is up one spot to #2 and 8.4% and Ford (+28.3%) is up two to #3 and 7.7%. Skoda (+11%), Volkswagen (+5.2%) and Opel (+3.9%) on the other hand underperform quite spectacularly. Nissan (+65.3%), Hyundai (+39.4%) and Toyota (+32.5%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 while further down, Lamborghini (+285.7%), Lexus (+68.8%), Citroen (+64%), Ferrari (+58.3%), Volvo (+44.8%) and BMW (+40.2%) stand out.

In the models ranking, the Dacia Logan (+26.9%) celebrates 15 years in pole position and manages to outpace its home market to improve its share to 16%. The Logan is now on a streak of 184 monthly wins, with no interruption since its launch back in September 2004. Even though the podium remains unchanged with the Dacia Duster (+33%) and Sandero (+75.5%) both markedly improving their shares, these two nameplates have lodged new milestones in 2019. The Duster leaped to a new monthly market share record in October at 10.5%, eclipsing the 10.3% it hit back in November 2014 and only the third time in history with February 2014 (10%) the Duster crossed the symbolic 10% market share milestone at home. As for the Sandero, in October also it scored its highest share this decade at 8.1%, smashing the 6.5% it reached in September 2013, then lifting it to 8.9% in November and 10.1% in December. Although we don’t have Romanian monthly data for 2008-2009 when the first generation Sandero launched, it is highly improbable that it broke the symbolic 10% share milestone then, making December 2019 the Sandero’s new all-time record share at home. The Renault Clio (+39.7%) overtakes the Skoda Octavia (+18.9%) to #4, the Nissan Qashqai (+115.3%) slices its ranking in two to #6 and both the Ford Ecosport (+87.1%) and Suzuki Vitara (+20.5%) break into the Top 10. The VW T-Cross is the most popular 2019 launch at #49.
