Portugal Full Year 2019: Renault Clio resists Mercedes A-Class and Fiat Tipo assaults

The Portuguese new car market puts an end to 6 consecutive years of gains in 2019 at -2% to 223.799 registrations. The brands podium remains unchanged on 2018 with Renault (-7.1%) in the lead at 13% ahead of Peugeot (+3%) at 10.6% and Mercedes (+0.6%) at 7.4%. Fiat (+8.4%) advances one spot to #4, Citroen (+9.4%) is up two to #5, BMW (+0.9%) remains at #6 and Seat (+17.6%) is up 4 to #7. However Nissan (-32.1%), Opel (-19.6%) and Volkswagen (-16.4%) close out the Top 10 in dreadful fashion. Further down, notice Porsche (+188.1%), Lamborghini (+171.4%), Alpine (+71.4%), Hyundai (+33.6%), Smart (+27%), Jeep (+24.3%), Mazda (+24.2%), Bentley (+23.5%), Suzuki (+13.7%) and Ferrari (+13%) while Tesla makes its entrance at #22.
The Renault Clio (-21.7%) scores a 7th consecutive annual Portuguese crown (no interruption since 2013) and 11th annual win in total (a series started in 1999), but implodes down to just 4.8% share vs. 6% a year go. In contrast the next four best-sellers all shine with double-digit gains. The Mercedes A-Class (+38.7%) stuns by gaining 4 spots on 2018 to land at an exceptional 2nd place overall, even topping the Portuguese monthly charts 5 times (in January and from July to October) vs. 6 times for the Clio. The Renault Captur (+19.1%) steps up one spot to #3 and the Fiat Tipo (+75.7%) surges 14 spots to #4 for the year, even topping the December charts outright. The Citroen C3 (+10.7%) rounds out the Top 5 above the Peugeot 208 (-10.1%), Renault Megane (-2.4%) and Peugeot 2008 (+0.3%). The Fiat 500 (+23.9%), Seat Arona (+23.1%), Leon (+22.8%) and Ford Focus (+13.7%) impress further down.
