26/02 update: Now with actuals for the Top 10 models.

The Malaysian new vehicle market edges up 0.9% year-on-year in 2019 to 604.287 registrations, its first time above the 600.000 mark since 2015. Passenger cars are the sole responsible for this annual uptick at +3.2% to 550.179 whereas commercial vehicles drop a ghastly -17.4% to 54.108. Perodua (+5.8%) continues to outpace its home to reach an all-time record share at 39.8% and record volume just above 240.000 units. But the hero of the year is Proton up a smashing 54.7% to leapfrog past Honda (-16.5%) and Toyota (+5.4%) and end the year in 2nd place overall for the first time since 2015. Proton also crosses the 100.000 annual sales milestone for the first time since 2015 and hits its highest share since 2014 at 16.6%. All remaining Top 10 brands endure double-digit losses, led by Mazda (-27.4%), Nissan (-25.8%), BMW (-22.6%) and Mercedes (-21.7%). Further down, Daihatsu (+42.2%), Volvo (+36.1%), Renault (+20.7%) and Porsche (+7.3%) are among the rare gainers.

The Perodua Aruz is estimated to be the #1 SUV in the country in 2019.

Over in the models ranking, after Perodua in 2018 it’s now the turn of Proton to release official annual sales, a very welcome move since the local government started banning models data release back in 2012. And for the first time since potentially 2011 – however models info is patchy from 2012 onwards, there are 6 Malaysian nameplates in the Top 7.  The Perodua Myvi (-0.2%) is stable at 13.6%, recording a second consecutive annual win and 11th overall as it also topped the Malaysian annual charts continuously from 2008 to 2014. The Perodua Axia (-5%), leader from 2015 to 2017, easily remans in 2nd place while the Perodua Bezza (-8.5%) ensures the models podium is 100% Perodua for the 4th year in a row. The Proton Saga (+90.2%) takes full advantage of its facelift and leaps up to #4 but the main events of the year in Malaysia is the arrival of two blockbuster SUVs, enabling both local carmakers to compete in the lucrative segment. Launched in January, the Perodua Aruz – a rebadged Toyota Rush – lands directly in 6th place with over 30.000 sales while the Proton X70 – a rebadged Geely Boyue – launched in December 2018 lands at #7 with just over 26.000 units. Honda places the City at #5 and the HR-V at #10 while Toyota has the Vios at #8.
