Canada October 2019: Jeep (+12%), Kia (+11%), Honda (+7.8%) headline 19th drop in past 20 months (-0.6%)

New light vehicle sales in Canada endure a 19th year-on-year drop in the past 20 months in October, however lifting its fall to -0.6% at 160.969 units, leading to a year-to-date tally down -3.8% to 1.674.542. Passenger car sales continue to freefall at -14.8% year-on-year to just 24.2% share vs. 28.2% in October 2018 while light trucks sales soar 5% to 75.8% share vs. 71.8%. Year-to-date, cars are down -15.6% to 25.9% vs. 29.5% over the same period in 2018 whereas light trucks edge up 1.1% to 74.1% vs. 70.5% last year. As we have done for the past few months in the US, we have combined industry estimates for overall FCA and GM August sales and are sharing our exclusive monthly estimates for all FCA and GM brands and models.

The Toyota RAV4 is now #3 year-to-date in Canada.

In the groups ranking, General Motors (-7.4%), Ford Motor (-1.9%) and Toyota Motor (-4.1%) all fall faster than the market but remain on the podium, followed by three in-shape manufacturers: Hyundai-Kia (+4.3%), Honda Motor (+4.7%) and most impressively FCA (+9%). Daimler AG (+5.7%) and the VW Group (+1.8%) also gain ground whereas Nissan/Mitsubishi (-9%) and the BMW Group (-6.9%) skid down significantly. Brand-wise, Ford (-1.4%) remains on top ahead of Toyota (-2.7%) with Honda (+7.8%) in outstanding shape on the third step of the podium. Kia (+11.1%) and Ram (+6.5%) also shine in the Top 10 whereas Nissan (-12.8%) and GMC (-11.1%) struggle. Below, Mitsubishi (+18.8%), Jeep (+12%), Dodge (+11.6%), Audi (+11.2%), Chrysler (+10.5%) and Mercedes (+6.4%) impress while McLaren (+100%), Maserati (+36.4%) and Lamborghini (+28.9%) stand out among smaller brands.

The Ford F-Series (+0.9%) edges up to easily stay atop the models charts with just under 11.000 sales ahead of the Ram Pickup (+8.8%) while the Toyota RAV4 (+13.2%) overcomes the Honda Civic (-8.8%) to snap the third spot in the YTD order. The Honda CR-V (+27.5%) steps up one spot on September to #4, with the Hyundai Elantra (+3.1%) and Chevrolet Silverado (+2.3%) also up in the remainder of the Top 10 but the GMC Sierra (-6.8%), Hyundai Tucson (-4.7%) and Toyota Corolla (-1.2%) are in reverse gear. The Honda HR-V (+260.3%), Nissan Kicks (+158.6%), Toyota Prius (+74.6%), VW Atlas (+63.1%), Hyundai Kona (+44.6%), Subaru Crosstrek (+43.6%), Jeep Wrangler (+36.5%), Mitsubishi Outlander (+22.9%), Kia Sportage (+22.1%), Kia Soul (+21.3%), Jeep Grand Cherokee (+20.9%) and Mazda CX-5 (+20.5%) are the best performers in the remainder of the Top 50. The Hyundai Palisade (#70) tops recent launches ahead of the Ford Ranger (#89), Jeep Gladiator (#91), Mercedes A-Class (#95) and Chevrolet Blazer (#103).
