Netherlands September 2019: Tesla Model 3 hits 15.1% share, largest monthly volume outside US (5.768)

The Tesla Model 3 is now the #1 vehicle in the Netherlands year-to-date.

As a EU member, the Dutch new car market soars 29.1% year-on-year in September to 38.122 registrations due to particularly weak year-ago volumes post-WLTP. The year-to-date tally is now down -7.9% to 331.267 units. Pushing back-loading of registrations to end-of-quarters to the extreme, Tesla (+258.1%) surges to #1 brand with an extravagant 15.5% share, beating its previous records of #2 and 11.1% established last December and 2.586 last June. Keep in mind these are not live sales in dealerships but batch deliveries of orders made sometimes years ago, timed to coincide with Tesla’s financial sales reporting period, albeit very impressive figures. Opel (+15.7%) lags the market growth rate but remains at #2 ahead of Peugeot (+30.8%), Toyota (+35.3%), Volkswagen (+54.5%), Renault (+51%) and Ford (+69.5%), all outpacing the already galloping market. Honda (+120.3%), Porsche (+117.5%), Skoda (+53.8%), Mercedes (+51.7%), Seat (+44.6%) and Audi (+41.1%) also shine below.

Tthe Tesla Model 3 takes the lead of the Dutch models ranking for the third time this year after last March (2.195 and 5.6%) and June (2.487 and 6%) – both end-of-quarters – smashing its volume and share records to 5.768 and 15.1%. This is the highest monthly volume reached by the Model 3 outside of the USA and the 2nd largest largest monthly volume for a single nameplate in the Netherlands this decade – and most likely in history – below the Peugeot 308 at 12.052 units in December 2015 and above the Mitsubishi Outlander at 4.988 in December 2013, both due to impending tax law changes. This month’s volume easily propels the Model 3 to #1 year-to-date with 13.587 sales ahead of the VW Polo (9.684) and Ford Focus (8.606), with a serious option to end the year at #1 like in Norway, and is already  The Opel Karl (+36.8%) is the only other model selling over 1.000 units for the month while the Ford Fiesta (+42.2%) is up 6 spots on August to #3 ahead of the Peugeot 108 (-4.4%) and Kia Niro (+68%).
