Czech Republic September 2019: Skoda above 40% share for 2nd time this decade, places record 6 models in Top 6
The Skoda Kamiq is getting closer to its home Top 10: up to #13 in September.
The Czech new car market only partly recovers from disastrous post-WLTP year-ago volumes in September at +8.5% to 15.770 registrations but down a dismal -22% on September 2017 which is a more realistic comparison base. The year-to-date tally is now down -8% to 191.110. Homegrown brand leader Skoda (+6.3%) fails to match the market growth but crosses the 40% share milestone for only the second time in the past 7 years and potentially this decade after September 2018 (41.1%). Hyundai (+5.3%) eclipses Volkswagen (+68.7%) for the 2nd place overall just as Renault (+44.2%), Kia (+27%), Peugeot (+19%) and Mercedes (+13.9%) all post very generous year-on-year upticks mostly linked to weak post-WLTP volumes then. Further down, notice Seat (+278.2%), Lada (+128.6%), Jeep (+121.4%), Land Rover (+103.8%), Porsche (+76.5%), Audi (+55.7%), Citroen (+44.5%) and Tesla (+44.4%) also zooming ahead.
In the models ranking, Skoda places a record 6 nameplates in the September Top 6, a feat it has already achieved twice before: in May 2017 and January 2019. The Octavia (-26%) holds onto the top spot for just 32 units above the Fabia (+9.4%), the Scala improves to a record 5.1% share, distancing the Karoq (+61.8%) and Kodiaq (+210.6%) both in stunning shape and finally the Superb (+7.4%). We may soon see a historical 7 in the Top 7 for Skoda as the Kamiq continues to gear up: up 16 spots on last month to a record #13 in September. The Hyundai i30 (+71.8%) confirms its status of favourite foreigner – albeit produced locally – by ranking #7 ahead of the Kia Cee’d (+27.3%), Hyundai Tucson (-12.6%) and Peugeot 2008 (+6.7%). Notice also the Seat Ibiza (+6050%), VW Caddy (+226.1%), Toyota RAV4 (+95.3%), VW Tiguan (+92.9%), Golf (+80.6%) and Dacia Duster (+41.2%) managing splendid progressions in the remainder of the Top 30.
