Sweden August 2019: VW #1, Toyota (+46.4%), Skoda (+44%), Volvo (+34.4%) lift market up 19.5%

The VW Golf is the best-selling vehicle in Sweden despite a ghastly -28.4% drop.

Last year the Swedish market didn’t operate like most European countries that recorded pre-WLTP rushes over Summer. Instead, a new bonus/malus pricing system was put in place on July 1 and depleted the market greatly over Summer. This way, August sales actually surge 19.5% year-on-year to 29.477, leading to a year-to-date tally down -15.9% to 221.016. August is a peculiar month in Sweden as Volkswagen (-27.1%) traditionally takes the lead above homegrown brand leader Volvo (+34.4%) who all but closes shop but shows great resolve this year. As such, this is Volkswagen’s 9th August victory in the past 10 years (only exception in 2017). Great performers are numerous: Toyota (+46.4%), Seat (+45.9%), Skoda (+44%), BMW (+27%), Nissan (+22.6%) and Mercedes (+22%) all outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10, with Kia (+16.3%) coming close and Audi (-7.5%) the only Top 10 carmaker in negative alongside Volkswagen. Below, Hyundai (+382.4%), Mitsubishi (+228.5%), Tesla (+227.3%), Subaru (+151%), Dacia (+117.7%) and Fiat (+100%) all show fireworks improvements.

The VW Golf (-28.4%) is up 3 spots on July to top the Swedish models for the 5th August in the past 6 years and the 11th time this decade despite a devastating loss. This is only the 12th time this decade that a Volvo isn’t #1 at home (add the VW Passat in August 2013). This added to the Tiguan (-30.1%) at #4 and the Passat (-53.2%) at #9 doesn’t give a great picture for traditional VW best-sellers. In contrast, the Volvo S/V60 (+57.7%) ends the month 80 sales below the Golf and cements its YTD leadership while the Volvo S/V90 (+22.5%) also posts a solid gain at #3. The Volvo XC60 (+125.2%) is down two spots on last month to #5 but scores the largest gain in the Top 5 ahead of the Kia Niro (-6.9%). The VW T-Cross (up 8 spots to #7) topples the Toyota Corolla (down 6 to #12) to become the most popular new launch in Sweden. The Toyota RAV4 (+223.3%) explodes to #8 thanks to the new generation, the Skoda Octavia (+70.7%) flies off to #10 and the Dacia Duster (+74.5%) is up to #13, its highest ranking since December 2017.
