Romania August 2019: Dacia Logan celebrates 15 consecutive years at #1 (180 straight months) in market down -18.8%

The Dacia Logan has been #1 in Romania every month since September 2004.

The Romanian new car market ends a stretch of 8 straight months of double-digit gains in August at -18.8% to 23.177 units because of an unusual high comparison base with pre-WLTP filled registrations a year ago. The year-to-date volume remains in excellent shape however at +13.7% to 118.003 units. Homegrown leader Dacia (-3.9%) resists a lot better than the market to remain above the symbolic 30% market share milestone at 30.8%. In contrast sister brand Renault (-55.8%) pays the price of abusing the pre-WLTP game last year, while Ford (+10.3%) posts the only double-digit gain in the Top 6 and distances Volkswagen (-5.8%) and Skoda (-6.8%) also containing their losses. Suzuki (+66.1%) and Hyundai (+30.5%) score the best improvements in the Top 10, with Maserati (+175%), Lexus (+111.5%) and Volvo (+71.6%) also in outstanding shape further down.

Model-wise, launched in September 2004 when it instantly grabbed 33% of its home market thanks to 4.617 registrations, the Dacia Logan (-1.9%) brilliantly celebrates 180 consecutive months or 15 full years at #1: never has it failed to rank as the best-selling nameplate in Romania ever since it launched. Still today, it sells over 2.5 times better than the #2, the Dacia Duster (-20.5%) while the Dacia Sandero (+24.7%) rounds up the podium with an excellent performance. The Suzuki Vitara (+46.3%) shoots up 7 spots on July to become the best-selling foreigner in August, distancing the Renault Clio (-56.3%), Skoda Octavia (+7.4%), Renault Megane (-57.4%) and Ford Ecosport (+57.8%) delivering the biggest year-on-year gain in the Top 10. The VW T-Cross (#40) remains the most popular new launch ahead of the Skoda Scala (#66) and Audi Q8 (#81).
